Actor Ray Buffer Charged with Theft After He’s Accused of Stealing Comics

Actor Ray Buffer, who resides in California, has been charged with misdemeanor theft after a comic book store in San Diego claimed that he had stolen from their establishment back in October.

Buffer, who made appearances on “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “ER,” was accused of petty theft by the San Diego City Attorney’s Office and entered a not-guilty plea in January, a representative for the office told The Post on Wednesday.

The spokesperson added that the accusation was related to an incident that happened on October 4, 2022, at Southern California Comics, which at the time publicly charged Buffer with stealing comics valued at hundreds of dollars.

Owner of Southern California Comics Jamie Newbold admitted to The Post on Wednesday that he was unaware Buffer had been charged until he received a call from a city attorney this week. He expressed his happiness that the case was progressing.

According to Newbold, “I thought this case got swept under or out of the way.” “Now that I understand the case matters, I know that my experience matters.

He said, after getting in touch with authorities two days after the October incident, “I was losing hope every month I didn’t hear from anyone.”

In an interview from October, Newbold outlined how he initially posted pictures of an unnamed man on social media to alert other comic book shops to the potential thief. Then, other companies asserted that the man was Buffer.

On Wednesday, Southern California Comics posted on Facebook that Buffer was being prosecuted.

Buffer’s lawyer is hoping to settle the case by allowing Buffer to enroll in a diversion program that would require the actor to make amends for the alleged theft, according to Newbold, who claimed to have learned this from the San Diego City Attorney’s Office.

If the courts allow him to make a financial payment for the crime, he “gets off really light,” according to Newbold. “I’d rather he sees justice,”

Approximately 10 comic books worth about $850, according to Newbold, were taken. The city attorney’s office refused to provide more information about the case, and on Wednesday night, the office did not appoint a defense lawyer for Buffer.

Buffer allegedly stole from at least one other comic shop in September, though it’s not clear if the claims resulted in any criminal activity.
