Who was Christian Atsu?
The winner of several accolades, Christian Atsu was born on the 10th of January, 1992 in Ada Foah, a region in Greater Accra. He completed his education at Feyenoord’s African Academy in Gomoa Fetteh, Accra. He started off his career with Porto, almost spending a season at Rio Are on loan. In the year, 2013 Chelsea signed him with an amount of £3.5 million and thereafter loaned him to clubs Vitesse Arnhem, AFC, Malaga, Everton, and Bournemouth. After the completion of his 2016-2017 season on loan, he signed a permanent deal in 2017 with Newcastle club. In his due time of the four-year contract, he played matches with Al-Raed in Saudi Arabia and Hatayspor in Turkey; where he lost his life in the Turkey-Syria earthquake. The sudden demise
Atsu went missing on February 6th, 2023 soon after the Turkey-Syria earthquake and it was believed that he got buried under the ruins of the headquarters of Hatayspor in Antakya. Atsu’s body was recovered from the ruins of 12-story building, which was his residence in Antakya, Hatay Province. It was followed by a 12-day search. The news of his death was confirmed by his agent Murat Uzunmehmet, who told the private news agency DHA.
Newcastle United paid their respect to their former player Christian Atsu before playing a match against Liverpool on February 18, 2023. The tribute was followed by a minute of applause and appreciation for the player. His wife Marie-Claire Rupio and his three children were there to see it.
