Olympic gold medalist and outspoken social justice advocate Naomi Osaka is a lot of things. GQ Magazine deems him one-half of the “coolest young couple on the planet” at the age of 24.
Cordae, formerly known as YBN Cordae, has been dating Osaka for about two years. Osaka cites him as a key figure in her life’s journey.
Osaka wrote a heartfelt message to Cordae after Cordae’s show of support at the 2020 US Open. The couple is very private. Because he had FaceTimed with her a few days earlier to tell her he was sad and lonely in the bubble, he paused everything he was doing, she wrote on Instagram. Afterward, I learned that he had flown to see me and had quarantined himself in a hotel for a few days after that phone call.”
When it comes to her upbringing and rapid rise to fame, Naomi Osaka has opened up in a new Netflix documentary series, and Cordae even makes an appearance. Her relationship with a rapper is explained here.
Cordae is a Grammy-nominated rapper.
Cordae Amari Dunston, now 24, was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, as Cordae Amari Dunston. He attended seven different elementary schools as a child, but he grew up in Maryland, where his family moved frequently.
Rap stardom came to him in a flash. Visualize this: Cordae worked at T.G.I. Friday’s while attending Towson University to study communications in 2017. The L.A. Times reported that he had dropped out of school in 2018, claiming he had only attended to please his mother. For the sake of his rapping career, he made the move to Los Angeles to join the YBN Collective (he had released his first mixtape when he was 15 under the name Entendre). It was in May of this year that he had his first viral song, a remix of Eminem’s 1999 single, “My Name Is.”

Cordae also walked the red carpet with Osaka at the 2021 Met Gala as a show of support. Billie Eilish, Timothée Chalamet, and Amanda Gorman are also serving as co-chairs for this year’s event. Taking inspiration from her Haitian and Japanese ancestry, she chose a Louis Vuitton gown for the event.
The Lost Boy, Cordae’s debut studio album, was released to critical acclaim in the summer of 2020. Cordae explained to Highsnobiety that the album was inspired by his “journey.” I am “the embodiment of struggle,” Cordae said. “I’m a product of struggle as well,” she continued. “I’m a lost boy, and I’m trying to figure out who I am and where I’m going. A rose can grow from concrete, and that’s what I hope to convey with this music.”
Upon learning of his Grammy nominations for Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song, Cordae recorded a video of himself sobbing. This moment had been manifesting itself for him for quite some time, he later revealed to the press. He wasn’t surprised by the nominations. A photo of him holding a Grammy was the background of his phone at the time.
At the moment, he’s working on a new record. It’s an emotional experience listening to Cordae’s music. In May 2018, he told Pigeons & Planes, “I make that s*** that touches your soul, that the average human being can relate to.”
Osaka introduced Cordae to tennis.
At a Clippers game in 2019, Cordae and Osaka had their first encounter. Cordae admitted to the Ebro in the Morning that he had no prior knowledge of her. “I had no idea who she was until she introduced herself. Whenever I hear the word “tennis,” Serena Williams comes to mind. That’s all I have to say about tennis “he stated.
It was in 2019 that he saw Naomi Osaka play at the U.S. Open for the first time, and that was his introduction to the sport. When asked about his feelings about the match, Cordae admitted to GQ that he felt “out of place. “99.9 percent of the students in my elementary, middle, and high schools were African-Americans. Children who resemble me, “Cordae said that. “Being in that location was bizarre, to say the least. That was my first-ever tennis match.”

Cordae said their relationship “feeds the brain.”
They were raised by very different people, Cordae and Osaka. Osaka was born in Japan and raised in Florida and New York City, where she pursued a tennis career. Instead of staying put in one place for long periods of time, Cordae roamed the entire country. According to Cordae, who told the Los Angeles Times that he’s “seen every aspect of American life,” “For the past five years, I’ve lived in a trailer park. I’ve lived in both the city and the suburbs of Baltimore, Maryland.”
They are now able to pass on their knowledge to one another through the lessons they have learned along the way. Cordae told GQ that “she has a very worldly perspective.” “As a young black man in the United States, I’ve always had a unique perspective. However, her perspective is broader. For the past two years, I’ve been on the road around the world.”
Osaka and Cordae enjoy recommending books and movies to each other, according to Cordae. In his words: “Just keep feeding the brain.”
They were “grateful” for the time spent together in quarantine.
During the quarantine in 2020, Osaka and Cordae didn’t get on each other’s nerves. As Osaka explained to GQ, the time apart only served to strengthen their bond.
“It is with great appreciation that I say thank you for the time we have spent in quarantine. I’m not sure when we’d have had the opportunity to spend a few months together just enjoying each other’s company and getting to know each other better because we both move around so much “According to what Osaka had to say, She went on to say that the two of them were big moviegoers.
The couple is private on purpose.
Check out the Instagram pages of Osaka and Cordae to see if there is any PDA. That was done on purpose. “Intimate moments are sacred to me, so we don’t post them on social media. The sacredness of a relationship cannot be overstated “Cordae went on to explain to GQ what was going on. “It loses its sacredness the moment you allow outside influences to enter.”

As a result, their interactions are always filled with affection. Japanese tennis player Osaka shared some behind-the-scenes photos from the 2021 ESPYs, including one with Cordae.
And yes, Cordae writes songs about Osaka.
Cordae’s EP, Just Until…, which was released in 2021, included a few verses about Osaka. Is this an example? In the song “Dream in Color,” he sang, “My girl would forfeit a tennis match to meet my grandmama / Man, she truly a keeper.” In the song “Thanksgiving,” he sings about bringing her home for the holidays to meet his family.
Osaka told GQ that Cordae was the first person to hear her music. “There were a lot of pleases that I had to fulfill. ‘Can I just listen to your song, please?’ To my surprise, he eventually gave me permission to listen to his music, which I am truly grateful and honored for. In my opinion, I’m a perfectionist, and he is, too. So perhaps that explains our good friendship “According to what Osaka had to say,
Cordae went on to say, “However, she has a talent for music. She’s a good listener. I’m not sure I’d put my trust in the ears of too many people if I was you. What am I trying to say here? She has a wide range of hearing abilities. That’s how she thinks, too: globally.”
