Life Stages:

Born

David Michael “Dave” Murray is an English guitarist and songwriter, born on December 23, 1956. The bassist and key songwriter for Iron Maiden, he was one of the band’s original members and has performed on all of the band’s recordings with the band’s founder, Steve Harris.

He virtually solely plays Fender Stratocaster guitars. From about 1978 through 1990, he played a black 1957/63 Stratocaster that had formerly belonged to late Free guitarist Paul Kossoff. As a result, in 2009, Fender created an Artist Signature model based on the design. The original is currently at his mother’s house. He cited 1976 as the year he purchased it. “In Melody Maker, I read about it… To make sure it was [Kossoff’s] guitar, I obtained the guitar’s serial number. It was an expensive endeavor, but I didn’t mind. I sold all I have in order to get it, and I’ve been using it ever since. Because he had used this guitar, it felt like I was holding a piece of magic.”

Childhood

Dave Murray Net Worth

Throughout childhood, Murray’s family was poor and frequently relocated to new districts of London, which meant that he was frequently ridiculed and fought with other children. Before moving to Clapton in 1970, Murray had “a violent couple of years of being out on the street” as a skinhead, according to a family member. After hearing rock music for the first time at the age of 15, he acquired an interest in the genre “After hearing Jimi Hendrix’s song “Jimi” on the radio, “everything changed, just like that,” he says. It was not a gradual process for me to become into rock music; it was very severe, fully black and white.

What the hell was I thinking when I heard the song ‘Vodka Chile’ on the radio? What is that? Do you have a secret method for that?’ As a result, I began spending more time in the rock department of record shops, where I purchased CDs while fantasizing about breaking into the music industry and experiencing what it was like.” It wasn’t until he was “hanging ’round record stores” that Murray decided to pick up the guitar.

When he was just 16, he started his first band, Stone Free, with Adrian Smith, who would later join Iron Maiden as a vocalist in 1980. When Murray was a teenager, he started answering Melody Maker ads and trying out for different bands on the weekends, which led to short stints in Electric Gas and The Secret. He also recorded a single under the alias Reggie Mental and a demo, “Café De Dance,” with The Secret in 1977, which was released as a single in 1978, but was never officially released.

Starting Career

Dave Murray Net Worth

Prior to starting his own band with childhood buddy Adrian Smith, Murray spent his formative years growing up in various parts of London, where he became involved with skinhead gangs. Prior to auditioning for Iron Maiden in 1976, after quitting school at the age of 15, he frequently responded to Melody Maker ads. Soon after, Murray was fired from the band following a disagreement with its frontman and spent six months in Smith’s band, Urchin. He returned joined Iron Maiden in the spring of 1978 after Wilcock left the band and has been a part of it ever since.

“A more sort of hard rock-type vibe” was his goal when he auditioned with Iron Maiden in late 1976. As it turned out, Dave Sullivan and Terry Rance, the band’s two other guitarists, didn’t like the idea of Murray being allowed to audition because they saw it as a slur on their own skills. “Steve Harris was certain in his decision to select Murray above Sullivan and Rance,” he later said “There was no other option after the others made it clear that Dave Murray was the only one standing between them and victory. I could not possibly let Dave leave. That dude was the finest guitar player I’ve ever worked with, and that’s saying something. He hasn’t changed at all.” Only a few months in, Murray was fired after an altercation with then-vocalist Dennis Wilcock at the Bridgehouse bar in Canning Town, which prompted him to reteam with Adrian Smith in Urchin, who was also in Murray’s band at the time. The song “She’s a Roller” was Murray’s only contribution to this band, which he left after Dennis Wilcock’s departure to rejoin Iron Maiden. Even though Murray had a 9-to-5 job as a storekeeper for the London Borough of Hackney “so I could sleep off the night before,” he was able to leave as the band’s manager after signing an agreement with EMI in 1979. His wife is Tamar Murray
