The Doctor Who 2022 specials are three additional episodes that follow the thirteenth series of the British science fiction television show, and were first confirmed in July 2021. The first special premiered on January 1, 2022, with subsequent specials following later that year. They will be the showrunner Chris Chibnall’s and Jodie Whittaker’s farewell episodes as the Thirteenth Doctor. Yasmin Khan and Dan Lewis, played by Mandip Gill and John Bishop, are the Doctor’s travelling companions in the specials.
Annetta Laufer, Haolu Wang, and Jamie Magnus Stone directed the three specials, respectively. All three specials were written by Chibnall, with one episode co-written by Ella Road, a new writer to the show. The first two specials were filmed concurrently with the thirteenth series and finished by August 2021, with the BBC centenary special wrapping up filming in October of the same year.
What Is the Release Date for The Doctor Who Centenary Special?
We still don’t know when Jodie Whittaker’s final season as the Doctor will air, but it has been confirmed that it will be in autumn 2022. The show also acts as a BBC Centenary special, commemorating the broadcaster’s 100th anniversary.
The Centenary falls on Tuesday, October 18th, therefore the Doctor Who special is expected to run around that time — if not the same week, if not the same day. As soon as a date is set, we’ll update this page.
Doctor Who’s 100th Anniversary Special Cast
Jodie Whittaker will reprise her role as the Thirteenth Doctor, with Mandip Gill as Yasmin Khan. Dan Lewis, played by John Bishop, was also confirmed in the trailer released after the Easter special.
Video (Jacob Anderson) and Kate Stewart (Jemma Redgrave) will make cameo appearances in the special after their last appearances in Doctor Who’s final full series in late 2021.
The BBC has also stated that legendary companions Ace (Sophie Aldred) and Tegan Jovanka (Janet Fielding) will reprise their roles for the final special.
“They’ll be helping the Doctor fight on three fronts, against her fiercest enemies: the Master, Daleks, and Cybermen, in one massive adventure,” showrunner Chris Chibnall stated.
Bradley Walsh was sighted near the set of the programme in 2021, prompting speculation that he would make a cameo as Graham O’Brien.
As foreshadowed by the season 13 finale and confirmed in the Centenary special’s trailer, Sacha Dhawan will play the evil The Master in Jodie Whittaker’s farewell episode as the primary antagonist.
Finally, whoever takes over as the Doctor after Whittaker will almost certainly appear in the episode’s final scene.
Trailer for The Doctor Who Centenary Special
The BBC released the first trailer for the Centenary special following the release of Legend of the Sea Devils, and it looks like an epic fight is in the works.
“Beware of the forces that are massing against you and their Master,” the Doctor warns.
Special Plot for Doctor Who’s 100th Anniversary
The BBC has yet to reveal plot details for the Centenary special, but it’s expected that this episode will wind up Jodie Whittaker’s time on the show’s The Division/Timeless Child narrative, as well as bring back Sacha Dhawan’s Master for one final confrontation.
The Daleks and Cybermen will also return, and the trailer suggests that they may be working together to take down the TARDIS team. In November 2021, a somewhat vague plot synopsis was provided, however, it doesn’t reveal much:
It’s the Thirteenth Doctor’s final adventure after many harrowing voyages against some of the most frightening monsters throughout space and time.
The Doctor will fight evil throughout the cosmos one more time in an epic blockbuster special, but who will she face in her final battle before the Doctor regenerates…
In Doctor Who, Who Will Be the New Doctor?
Ncuti Gatwa, the star of Sex Education, has been cast as the next Doctor in Doctor Who.
“There aren’t quite the words to convey how I’m feeling,” Ncuti remarked of his new role. A mixture of great gratitude, extreme excitement, and, of course, apprehension. This position and show represent so much to so many people throughout the world, including myself, and each of my very skilled predecessors has handled it with the utmost care. I will make every effort to do the same.
“To be able to work with Russell T Davies, who is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself, is a dream come true.” His writing is lively, engaging, immensely intelligent, and full of danger. The metaphorical playground of an actor. The entire cast has been really hospitable and has given their all to the production. As terrifying as it is, I am aware that I will be joining a very supportive family. I may only have one heart, but unlike the Doctor, I am giving it all to this show.”
“The future is here, and it’s Ncuti!” said returning showrunner Russell T. Davies. I just step back in awe and thank my lucky stars when talent walks through the door that is so bright, brazen, and spectacular.

“Ncuti dazzled us, seizing the Doctor and claiming the TARDIS keys in a flash. Working with him is an honour and a blast, and I can’t wait to get started. I’m sure you’re itching to learn more, but we’re holding off for now, since Jodie’s dramatic conclusion is still to come. But I assure you, 2023 will be great!”
