On November 10, 1969, Pompeo was born in Everett, Massachusetts. Her mother is of Irish ancestry. While her father was born in Gesualdo, Italy, and was of Italian, English, and Irish descent.

She had a Catholic upbringing.

When she was four years old, her mother overdosed on painkillers and died.

Soon after, her father remarried; he passed away on September 1, 2012. Pompeo claimed in 2006 that losing her mother at such a young age—at 39—had “made me appreciate life so much.”

She has two brothers and three sisters, totaling five older siblings. Both “the pencil” and “stracciatella” were given to her.

When she first began dating her current boyfriend, she was a bartender in Miami. In 1995, they relocated to New York City, where she was contacted by a casting director about appearing in Citibank and L’Oreal commercials.

In 2003, Pompeo and Chris Ivery first connected at a Los Angeles supermarket. After six months of friendship, they started dating, and in 2007. They are parents to a son and two daughters.
