On June 10, 2022, Netflix premiered First Kill, an American supernatural teen drama series written and created by Victoria Schwab.
Schwab’s short story of the same name served as the inspiration for the show. This was canceled after one season in August 2022.
‘First Kill’ Canceled by Netflix After One Season
There are many factors that go into Netflix’s decision to renew or cancel a show. First Kill, starring Sarah Catherine Hook and Imani Lewis, had a decent run based on Netflix’s Top 10 viewership figures and featured mostly up-and-coming actors.
First Kill debuted at No. 7 on the streaming service’s weekly Top 10 for English-language TV series in its first three days of release, with 30.3 million hours of viewing.
eaky Blinders Season 6 and remained in the Top 10 for one more week before falling off. Within the first 28 days of its release, the show easily surpassed 100 million hours of viewing time.
Though it didn’t hold up as well as other Netflix shows, it still failed to meet viewing and episode completion thresholds. HBO Max recently canceled Gordita Chronicles due to a decrease in live-action family and children’s programming on the streaming service.
First Kill was based on a short story written by best-selling author Victoria “V. E.” Schwab. With her first kill required in order to take her rightful place among the powerful vampire family, teenage vampire Juliette (Hook) sets her sights on a newcomer named Calliope (Lewis).
To Juliette’s dismay, Calliope turns out to be a vampire hunter, descended from an esteemed lineage of slayers. As they learn more about one another, they realize that the other isn’t as easy to take out as they thought.
Elizabeth Mitchell, Aubin Wise, Jason Robert Moore, Gracie Dzienn, Will Swenson, Phillip Mullings Jr., Dominic Goodman, and Dylan McNamara were also part of the ensemble in this movie.
Through Belletrist Productions, Henderson served as showrunner and executive produced alongside creator Schwab, as well as Roberts and Karah Preiss.
How Well Is First Kill Performing on Netflix?
A total of 30.34 million hours were watched in the show’s first three days on Netflix worldwide. During its premiere week, it had to contend with the likes of Surviving Summer (which was also hoping for a second season) and Stranger Things, which dominated the headlines and the viewing audience.
While viewership increased by 61 percent in week two, it dropped by 62 percent in week three, when the show logged 48.77 million hours viewed.
After the fourth week, it was no longer on the schedule, resulting in an audience of fewer than 15.02 million hours. In total, First Kill had 97.66 million hours watched on Netflix worldwide from June 5th to June 26th.
First Kill’s three-day debut can be compared to other shows to see how it compares. There were only 14.55 million viewers for Heartstopper, which dropped when the episodes had a shorter runtime.
An alternative comparison would be In From the Cold, science fiction or fantasy-themed television series with a similar style of storytelling. That racked up 24.72 million hours in just three days. A 64 percent drop in viewership from week 2 to week 3 is worth noting for that show, which has yet to be renewed for another season.
The show’s interest in week two jumped 90 percent, according to data from Parrot Analytics (which was published via TheWrap), and it now ranks just behind Ms. Marvel and ahead of Gaslit in terms of demand
