Cheryl Gates McFadden (born March 2, 1949) is a choreographer and actor from the United States. When working as a choreographer, she is normally credited as Cheryl McFadden, and when working as an actress, she is credited as Gates McFadden. In the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation, four subsequent films, and the successor series Star Trek: Picard, she portrayed Dr. Beverly Crusher.
McFadden was born in the Ohio city of Akron. She received a Bachelor of Arts (cum laude) in theatre arts from Brandeis University before traveling to Paris to study theatre with actor Jacques Lecoq at his school of physical theatre. McFadden has Lithuanian ancestors on her mother’s side.

McFadden taught in post-secondary theater and dance departments such as those at the University of Pittsburgh, Harvard University, and George Washington University in the 1970s. During this time, she founded The New York Theatre Commotion and toured an all-female clown show called “Commedia Dell Pinky” in 1975.
McFadden worked as the director of the choreography and puppet movement on The Jim Henson Company’s Labyrinth, The Muppets Take Manhattan, and uncredited work on Dreamchild. She is frequently billed as “Gates McFadden” as an actress and “Cheryl McFadden” as a choreographer to distinguish her acting work from her choreography.
She was credited as “Cheryl McFadden” in the Troma film When Nature Calls (1985) and “Cliff’s 50th Birthday” in the season three episode of The Cosby Show. Caroline Ryan, Jack Ryan’s wife, appeared uncredited in The Hunt for Red October.

Personal life
McFadden’s pregnancy was not incorporated into the fourth season of Star Trek; instead, her character hid it by wearing a laboratory coat over her uniform. Brent Spiner, her Next Generation co-star, is her son’s godfather.
