Tom Cruise, who has spent 60 years orbiting the sun, nevertheless craves speed and has established himself as one of the most successful and undoubtedly great actors of his generation.

In honor of the actor’s 60th birthday, Variety has ranked his top 15 screen appearances.

The actor from Syracuse, New York, had a breakthrough role in the coming-of-age movie “Risky Business” (1983), which catapulted him into the hearts of Hollywood and global viewers.

Cruise has continued to carve himself into the cultural zeitgeist, spanning several generations, as Joseph Kosinski’s “Top Gun: Maverick” is still going strong and earning more than half a billion dollars domestically.

Cruise, who is also a producer, has advanced the entertainment industry with the “Mission: Impossible” series, which debuted in 1995. He has produced five extremely successful sequels, and there are two more in the works, so he’s still pushing the envelope as a courageous stuntman and supporter of the big screen.

With a career that only the most daring actors and artists can imagine, Cruise has collaborated with two best actor Oscar winners, Dustin Hoffman in “Rain Man” and Paul Newman in “The Color of Money,” and he has received three Oscar nominations for his roles in “Born on the Fourth of July,” “Jerry Maguire,” and “Magnolia” (1999).

However, it hasn’t been about Tom Cruise receiving praise. Following an exposé on the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s lack of diversity, notably the absence of any Black members, he surrendered his three Golden Globe Awards in May 2021.

Over $10 billion has been made by Cruise’s movies globally, and things are just getting better. Will he ever be a deserving Oscar? It remains to be seen, but if the Academy decides to honor a future endeavor, the story is there.
