Historical Accuracies of 1923
According to Paramount+, 1923 “introduces a new generation of the Dutton family exploring the early 20th century, when pandemics, historic droughts, the end of Prohibition and the Great Depression ravaged the Mountain West and the Duttons that call it home.”
In addition to some of the biggest current events of the 1920s, 1923 also looks back at World War I. The early 20th century was a difficult time for many Americans, and the Duttons seem to have felt the effects of that difficult time.
Montana’s Great Depression
The Great Depression started in America in 1929, but it started in Montana. The Great Depression began in Montana in 1918. This is nearly ten years ahead of him in other countries.
While the rest of America prospered, Montana struggled. Between the drought and reduced demand for agricultural products, many farmers suffered greatly.
As a result, Montana farmers defaulted on their war loans. The result was widespread bank failures across the state.
Between 1921 and 1925, half of Montana’s farmers lost their land. By 1925, 70,000 of his 82,000 Homestead residents had left Montana. Also, 200 banks in Montana went bankrupt. Crops were affected not only by drought, but also by locust infestation. Cattle also suffered from many diseases. As ranchers, the drought and the Great Depression may have affected the Dutton family. The 1920s were not easy times for Montana farmers and ranchers.
Drought was a major factor in the early onset of the Great Depression in Montana. In the 1920s, Montana suffered a drought that devastated the country. The drought in the state has gotten so bad that the average Montana farm has shrunk from an average of 25 bushels per acre to just 2.4 bushels per acre. John Dutton Sr. points his gun at the gun in the 1923 television trailer for his series. The situation became even more difficult for the farmers as the drought set the prairies on fire and severe dust storms blew away the topsoil.
Pandemic, Prohibition ad World War I
One of the key aspects that characterized the early beginnings of the Great World seen in 1918-1920 was the devastating impact of the Spanish Flu. It is estimated that almost one-third of the world’s population is infected with the virus. As a result, an estimated 50 million people worldwide died from the virus.
Prohibition lasted in the United States from 1920 to 1933, prohibiting the manufacture, transportation, and sale of intoxicating liquor. Enforcement of the law proved difficult, however, and alcohol smuggling became commonplace.
The year 1923 is set after the end of World War I, but war continues to play a role in the series. Jacob Dutton’s nephew, Spencer Dutton, saw the horrors of war in World War I. is a veteran of The trailer for the series even gives us a glimpse of Spencer’s time during the war, which is likely to be seen in flashbacks throughout the World War I series, affecting not just the Dutton family but the entire nation.
