Richard Bruce Cheney is an American politician and businessman who served as President George W. Bush’s 46th Vice President from 2001 until 2009. After the death of Walter Mondale in 2021, he is the oldest living former US vice president. Cheney was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, and raised in Casper, Wyoming.
He attended Yale University before receiving a bachelor’s and master’s degree in political science from the University of Wyoming. He began his political career as an intern for Congressman William A. Steiger and worked his way up through the Nixon and Ford administrations. From 1975 to 1977, he was the White House chief of staff.
Early Career
Cheney began his political career as an intern for Congressman William A. Steiger during the Richard Nixon administration in 1969. From 1969 to 1970, he worked for Donald Rumsfeld, the Director of the Office of Economic Opportunity.
In the years that followed, he held many jobs, including White House Staff Assistant in 1971, Assistant Director of the Cost of Living Council from 1971 to 1973, and Deputy Assistant to the President from 1974 to 1975.
In a memo to Rumsfeld, Cheney suggested several options, including using the US Justice Department, that the Ford administration could use to limit the damage from a New York Times article in which investigative reporter Seymour Hersh reported that Navy submarines had tapped into Soviet undersea communications as part of a highly classified program called Operation Ivy.
