He hacked the website of New York City’s leading cab dispatch firm when he was 17 years old. He offered to assist address the issue in an email to the dispatch company’s CEO.
He accepted a job offer and relocated to New York City, where he enrolled at NYU.
As the dotcom fever swept the country in the 1990s, Jack accompanied his boss from the dispatch company to San Francisco, where they started a web business that failed fast.
After that, Jack got a position at Odeo, a podcasting firm founded by Evan Williams, who had previously founded Blogger and would later found Medium.
Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone, and Noah Glass held a “daylong brainstorming session” in 2006 to come up with new Odeo product features.
One of the concepts that emerged from that meeting was a microblogging/messaging concept that Dorsey tried with Blackberry phones while at NYU.
The group was enthusiastic about the concept and organized a small committee to work on “project twttr.” As you may be aware, this evolved into Twitter.
Rather than incorporating Twitter into Odeo, Evan took the contentious choice to return many million dollars in cash to his Odeo backers and create Twitter as a distinct new company.
Later on, several of those Odeo investors would argue that they were left out of Twitter’s success.
