Among the few remaining noteworthy freeform rock DJs in United States commercial radio is Jim Ladd born January 17, 1948, an American disc jockey, radio producer, and writer.

Ladd has talked to many famous musicians, including John Lennon, the Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, Rush, Styx, U2, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, the Eagles, and Led Zeppelin.
In 1969, Ladd got his start at the modest Long Beach rock station KNAC. When his two years were over, he made the move to KLOS in Los Angeles.

KMET management shocked southern California and all of the radio on February 14, 1987, when the station suddenly dropped rock music, the call letters, and the entire air staff, changing its name to KTWV and adopting a new age format w/ new age music.
