Joe Hill Whedon (/widn/; June 23, 1964) is an Oscar-nominated American director, composer, and comic book writer.

The creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997–2003), Angel (1999–2004), the Internet musical miniseries Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog (2008), the science fiction drama Dollhouse (2009–2010), and the Marvel Cinematic Universe series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013–2023), he also founded Mutant Enemy Productions and co-founded Bellwether Pictures (2021).

Here’s a Rundown of Every Controversial Moment in Joss Whedon’s Career so Far

Joss Whedon, creator of the feminist, Sarah Michelle Gellar–led hit series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, and Marvel’s The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron, was once celebrated for his innovative take on a genre dominated by men.

However, this widespread acclaim has crumbled as more and more actors and former coworkers have come forward with allegations of mistreatment by Whedon on the set, some of which date back more than 20 years. Most recently, Buffy star Charisma Carpenter has spoken out about the alleged bullying she endured on set while she was pregnant.

Although new allegations have surfaced about Whedon’s behaviour on set and his less-than-feminist writing for women in film and television in recent months, this is not the first time Whedon has been under scrutiny for his behaviour on set or for his writing.

There have been numerous allegations and scandals surrounding Whedon throughout his career, and Vulture has compiled a comprehensive rundown of each. Many viewers of Buffy the Vampire Slayer have said that the sixth season was the worst.

Whedon’s influence is still present, even though showrunner Marti Noxon shouldered most of the blame for the season’s bleak subject matter.

Alyson Hannigan’s character, Willow Rosenberg, becomes the season’s main antagonist after she dives headfirst into witchcraft after the death of her girlfriend, Tara (something Noxon later said she regretted). This not only ties Willow’s interest in women and magic with her evil “Dark Willow” transformation, but it also plays right into the “bury your gays” trope.

Buffy’s female characters go through a lot of pain as they develop or regain their abilities throughout the season, and this is the central plot point.

After Buffy’s best friend Xander Harris abandoned her at the altar, former vengeance demon Anya returns to her old ways. When Buffy is brought back to life (and the brutality of her slayer duties), she is subjected to a variety of new and increasingly unpleasant tests and trials.

Her cynicism and trauma stem from the fact that she was ripped from a heavenly dimension by well-meaning friends, which in turn leads to a lot of emotional destruction and hate-sex with vampire Spike, which culminates in a chilling rape scene.

In this story, the woman who has overcome tremendous odds and saved countless lives is the target of a sexual assault. The men in Buffy, from Spike to Xander to the Trio, are always yanking the women around and declaring them emotionally unstable.

There were parts of season six where I feel we went too far,” Noxon said afterward. We went down a path that felt almost sadistic, with Buffy voluntarily engaging in actions that went beyond simple irresponsibility or “bad choices.”

Former Wife Kai Cole Dishes on Ex-Husband Joss Whedon

When August 2017 rolled around, The Wrap published a guest blog by Kai Cole titled “Joss Whedon Is a ‘Hypocrite Preaching Feminist Ideals. She revealed that he told her about extramarital affairs he had with actresses, coworkers, fans, and friends long after Buffy ended production.

Former couple Cole and Whedon split up in 2012, with Cole claiming that Whedon hid his extramarital affairs under the feminist banner. He told her that he preferred women over men and that his mother’s feminist upbringing was the reason he had so many female friends.

When he was running Buffy, Cole claimed he wrote to her, “I was surrounded by beautiful, needy, aggressive young women.” I felt like I was afflicted with a disease straight out of Greek mythology.

Now that I’m a major producer, opportunities are literally falling at my feet, but I have no idea what to do with them. Whedon’s rep at the time said the blog post “includes inaccuracies and misrepresentations.” The director didn’t reply because he was “worried about his children and respectful toward his ex-wife.”

During his conversation with Vulture, he addressed the article. Those around him took advantage of the fact that “I was made a target by my ex-wife,” he explained.

Despite the fact that I had done the bad things and people knew I was gettable, “she put out a letter saying some bad things I’d done and saying some untrue things about me.” Even his flings on the set of Buffy were discussed. It upsets the power dynamic, he said, and “I feel fucking terrible about them.”

Additionally, he claimed he “had” to sleep with the women because he was “powerless” to say no. To paraphrase, he said he would “always [regret] it” if he hadn’t taken advantage of the opportunity to have sex with attractive women.

At the outset of his career, he was beloved by many followers thanks to his ability to portray women as strong and fearless onscreen. Some readers felt his characters were exploited by having to endure horrific experiences like assault in order to emerge “stronger.”

Details about what went on behind the scenes of these shows quickly emerged, damaging his reputation as a champion for women. His 2009 series Dollhouse, starring Eliza Dushku, generated some raised eyebrows due to its premise.

The show focused on a secret facility known as the Dollhouse, where women known as “actives” have their identities wiped clean before being assigned to serve the whims of the wealthy and powerful.

The actives’ memories were wiped after each task, so they never remembered what they were made to do. After only two seasons, the show was axed. In 2021, Dushku praised Carpenter on Instagram for speaking out about her struggles with addiction.
