James Franklin McIngvale (February 11, 1951) is a Houston, Texas-based businessman known as “Mattress Mack.” He is most known for being the owner and operator of the Gallery Furniture retail business.
McIngvale was born in Starkville, Mississippi, on February 11, 1951. He played football at North Texas State University, now the University of North Texas, in Denton after graduating from Bishop Lynch High School in Dallas. He and his wife are the parents of four children.
McIngvale is best known for his fast-paced, exuberant sales speeches, which usually culminate with some variation of his slogan “saves you money!” His particular sales strategy stems from an early occurrence in Gallery Furniture’s history. When he ran out of money, McIngvale put all of his remaining funds, about $10,000, into a television commercial that aired on two Houston stations.
He felt displeased while watching the advertisement being made and improvised a sales speech, speaking quickly due to the time constraints. The commercial was extremely successful, and his sales skyrocketed as a result.
Jim and his wife Linda were executive producers of the action-comedy picture Sidekicks, starring Chuck Norris and Jonathan Brandis, in 1992; in exchange, Norris made several television ads for Jim and Linda’s company, Gallery Furniture.
McIngvale talked at the British Deming Association annual conference in 1999 about W. Edwards Deming’s influence on his business strategies. Always Think Big, co-authored by Jim McIngvale, Thomas Duening, and John Ivancevich, was published in 2002 and covers the ups and downs of McIngvale’s business career.
He lives in the Northgate Forest neighborhood of Harris County, Texas, which is unincorporated. He was “one of Northgate’s most identifiable residents,” according to Ericka Mellon of the Houston Chronicle.
McIngvale declined to pay $48,000 in taxes to the Greater Northside Management District between 2005 and 2007, according to the Houston Chronicle in May 2009. He did pay taxes to the district in 2008. His northside facility is located within the district.
According to McIngvale, the management district does not do enough to maintain the region, and the taxation policies of the management district constitute “taxation without representation.” The district filed a lawsuit against McIngvale in an attempt to compel him to pay the taxes, and McIngvale has stated that he is eager to fight the accusations in court. McIngvale opened his stores to residents devastated by Hurricane Harvey, which inundated the city in August 2017.

When Houston was inundated by Tropical Storm Imelda in 2019, McIngvale reopened Gallery Furniture and teamed with Crisis Clean Up to give free meals and shelter at the North Freeway site.
During the 2021 Texas power outage and winter storms, McIngvale enabled individuals to stay the night at Gallery Furniture to escape the cold. In 2021, in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida’s evacuation and destruction along the Gulf Coast (especially in Louisiana and New Orleans), McIngvale began sheltering Louisianans at Gallery Furniture and providing free warm meals and amenities.
He also coordinated a supply donation drive and caravan to distribute goods to the area in south Louisiana. James, Eden, Caleb, Olivia, Brody, and Sydney are his six grandchildren.
McIngvale bet $4.5 million on the Cincinnati Bengals to win Super Bowl LVI on February 3rd, 2022. It has officially established the record for the greatest mobile wager in the history of sports betting.
Jim Mc Ingvale’s Net Wealth and Salary
Mattress Mack, or Jim McIngvale, is an American businessman with a net worth of $300 million. He is most known for being the owner and operator of the Gallery Furniture chain in Houston.
Mattress Mack is also renowned for placing enormous wagers on sporting events, especially on the Houston Astros. If the Astros win, he often runs discounts at his stores where clients may get their money back on newly purchased mattresses. To offset the cost of the campaign, he places hefty bets on the Astros.
Mattress Mack, for example, spent $3.45 million over a half dozen sports books leading up to the World Series in 2021, when his Astros faced the Braves. Winning the bet would result in a record-breaking profit of $35.6 million, with around $22 million coming from Caesars SportsBook in Las Vegas. He projected that it would cost $22 million to cover his mattress marketing.

Jim started Gallery Furniture in his pickup truck with $5,000 in his savings in 1981. In those early months and years, the business developed slowly but steadily, but when the oil industry crashed, so did nearly every retail firm in Texas.
Jim invested his remaining $10,000 in a series of local television commercial spots in 1983. While filming one of those commercials, he became upset and proceeded to remove money from his pockets while exclaiming, “Gallery Furniture saves you money!” The line was a big hit with the crowds, and it became his signature catchphrase.
Gallery Furniture is now one of the country’s most successful independent furniture businesses. Its stores have had the highest sales per square foot of any store in the United States at various times. According to 2005 sources, the corporation makes $200 million in annual revenue. Annual revenue was estimated to be around $150 million in a 2015 update.
