Early Life and Rap Career
NBA Young was born Kentrell DeSean Gaulden in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1999. His maternal grandmother raised him when his father was condemned to 55 years in prison. He shattered his neck as a toddler and had to wear a head brace for the rest of his life. His forehead was scarred from the head brace.
As a teenager, he dropped out of high school. Police arrested him and took him to a prison center for robbery. When Gaulden was released, his grandma passed away. He then moved in with NBA 3Three, a fellow rapper and friend. They used to commit crimes to pay for studio time.
In 2015, Gaulden released his first mixtape, “Life Before Fame.” He followed that up with mixtapes including “Mind of a Menace,” “Before I Go,” and “38 Baby,” all of which included fellow rappers “Stroke Tha Don” and “Boosie Badazz.”
In a song, Gaulden and rapper Scotty Cain traded death threats. When he was jailed in Austin, Texas on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder, he became well-known.
He was involved in criminal behavior even before he started his music career. He was first apprehended after stepping out of a car and shooting a group of people. In 2015, he pled guilty and was sentenced to ten years in prison plus three years of active probation. His sentence was later reduced to probation.
In 2018, he was arrested and imprisoned for suspected assault, kidnapping, and firearms offenses. After that, he was released on bond.
Gaulden has eight children, two of which, Kacey and Kayden, participated in the music video for Gaulden’s track “Kacey Talk.”
