Richard Jay Belzer was an American actor, stand-up comedian, and author who lived from August 4, 1944, to February 19, 2023.

He was best known for playing the roles of BPD Detective, NYPD Detective/Sergeant, and DA Investigator John Munch on the NBC police drama series Homicide: Life on the Street and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. He also made guest appearances on a number of other series and also played the role for 23 years, starting in 1993 and ending in 2016, before retiring.

According to a number of online reports, including the Hollywood Reporter, the actor Richard Belzer has died at the age of 78.

Belzer, who played detective John Munch on “Law & Order: SVU” and “Homicide: Life on the Street” for many years, reportedly died early on Sunday at his home in Bozouls, France.

Although there has been no indication of the cause of death, Bill Scheft, a writer and friend of Belzer, told the Hollywood Reporter that Belzer “had lots of health issues.”

Early Life And Education

Belzer was born to a Jewish family on August 4, 1944, in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

He claimed that his mother frequently beat him and his brother, and that his attempt to make his mother laugh as a way of getting her to stop beating them was the beginning of his comedic career. Belzer began working as a reporter for the Bridgeport Post after completing his studies at Fairfield Warde High School.

Belzer was expelled from Dean College in Franklin, Massachusetts, which was then known as Dean Junior College.

Richard Belzer Personal Life

Belzer’s first two marriageso store manager Dalia Danoch in 1976.  Gail Susan Ross in 1966–1972, both ended in divorce.

He first met Harlee McBride, a divorcee with two daughters named Bree Benton and Jessica, in Los Angeles in 1981 when she was 31 years old.

McBride, who had previously been featured in Playboy magazine four years prior in that year’s sex-in-theatre feature alongside Young Lady Chatterley, was doing Ford TV commercials and free theatre when a friend suggested that she meet Belzer. They got hitched in 1985.
