Early Life and Career Beginnings
RuPaul Andre Charles, or simply RuPaul, was born on November 17, 1960, in San Diego, California. He is the youngest of three siblings. He and his brothers were raised by their mother, Ernestine “Tony” Charles when his parents split in 1967.
RuPaul and his sister Renettea traveled to Atlanta, Georgia, to study the performing arts when he was fifteen years old. He struggled as a filmmaker and musician in the 1980s, working at the venerable Plaza Theatre.
He sang as a backup singer for Glen Meadmore at venues such as the Celebrity Club. In 1989, he got his first break as a dancer in the B-52s’ music video “Love Shack.”

RuPaul purchased a 10,300-square-foot lavish property in Beverly Hills for $13.7 million in October 2019. In 2011, they paid $2.5 million for their last home.
They attempted to sell the former home for $5 million in 2018 but were unsuccessful. He’s owned a $350,000 apartment in New York City for almost 25 years. He bought a condo in West Hollywood, California, for $600,000 in 2007.
