Under the name Science, Fiction Writers of America, Inc., Damon Knight created the group in 1965. Jeff Kennedy is the president of SFWA as of July 1, 2021. Around 1,900 professional published writers are members of SFWA.

The Nebula Honors, one of the most important English-language science fiction awards, are decided by SFWA Active members.
