Developers of Sonic Omens allegedly sexualized Maria, stole music from Cars 2, and paywalled previews on Patreon.
The true portent here is the stories about the development of this Sonic fan game.
Reportedly completing Sonic Omens “out of spite,” blocking anyone who had negative opinions of the game, stealing and rearranging music from Cars 2: The Video Game, and sexualizing a 12-year-old named Maria by having the phrase “Bad Girl” printed on her underwear, the developers at Ouroboros Studio have been the subject of much criticism for their work on Sonic the Hedgehog fan game Sonic Omens.
The final episode of Sonic Omens was just released, and it has already garnered a lot of attention from Sonic fans because it features the death of Chris Thorndyke from Sonic X and the transformation of Maria from Sonic Adventure into a boss fight. However, Farkle’s compilation and sharing of behind-the-scenes anecdotes through the Sonic Omens Twitter account present a considerably harsher picture of the game and Ouroboros Studio, despite the fact that reviews of the fan game have been fairly mixed.
Sonic Omens Allegedly Sexualized Maria
Farkle published a document titled “Sonic Omens and the Downfall of Ouroboros,” in which the team is accused of sexually exploiting a 12-year-old girl named Maria, harassing anyone who provided a negative feedback on the game, replacing voice actors without warning, paywalling previews behind Patreon, and of making money for the game through advertisements on Game Jolt. You can see the devs finished the project “out of spite” in these screenshots from the Twitter thread.
One of the main accusations is that Ouroboros Studio has been earning money off of the project by paywalling previews of the game on Patreon and advertising it on Game Jolt. If brought to Sega’s attention, this could become a more serious situation because Sega’s own copyright restrictions let all Sonic fan games but do not permit anyone to make money from their IP.
Omens Stole Music from Cars 2 and Paywalled Previews on Patreon
The game’s soundtrack is also plagued by issues. Farkle claims that the game’s composer, John R1se, plagiarised Oil Rig Race from Cars 2: The Video Game by altering the instruments and re-releasing it as his own work under the name Unknown Race. One need just listen to Farkle’s comparison of the two songs to hear the striking similarities between them.
Maria, Shadow the Hedgehog’s surrogate sister and a 12-year-old girl, is the subject of one of the document’s more serious charges. Farkle asserts that an unnamed viewer of Maria’s model noticed the sexually suggestive words “Bad Girl” emblazoned on her underpants. It’s not possible to see the texture when fighting the boss, as Farkle points out; whoever did that was probably just messing around.
Many more accusations are made against Ouroboros Studio in this paper, with evidence including Discord screenshots. Unfortunately, Ouroboros Studio has not yet addressed the accusations.
