Squid Game Season 2: Expected Release Dates & Updates!

Netflix released Squid Game in September 2021 as part of their ‘Halloween and Chill’ series, and it rapidly became one of their most popular releases to date.

Hundreds of individuals participate in children’s games for the opportunity to win a $40 million reward in Squid Game, which stars Lee Jung-Jae, Park Hae-soo, and Wi Ha-jun. Doesn’t it seem to be innocuous? Participants quickly learn that the stakes are significantly greater (and a lot more brutal) than they had anticipated.

The violence is very intense, so it’s not for the faint of heart, but the k-drama seems to have *everyone* talking. So, will Squid Game get a second season? Yes! It has already been established. Here’s all you need to know about it.

*Spoilers*

Has the second season of Squid Game been announced?

Netflix has officially announced the second season of Squid Game. Yay!

According to Variety, Netflix’s co-CEO and chief content officer, Ted Sarandos, confirmed the announcement during an interview on the streaming platform’s fourth-quarter 2022 results. “Absolutely,” Sarandos said when asked whether the second season of Squid Game will be made. “The Squid Gameworld is only getting started.”

That’s all there is to it: it’s official. Sarandos’ remark of a “Squid Gameworld” also suggests that the series might go in new directions. Exciting.

Netflix’s announcement comes after Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of Squid Game, planned a second series in November 2022.

Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed the second season was in the works two months after the first was published, telling the Associated Press, “There’s been a lot of pressure, a lot of demand, and a lot of love for a second season.”

“It’s almost as if you don’t give us an option!” However, I can confirm that there will be a second season. However, I believe it is too early to predict when and how it will occur. So I’ll make a pledge to you… Gi-hun will return and accomplish something good for the planet.”

The filmmaker revealed in September 2021 that he began creating Squid Game in 2008, thus another series might take some time to come up with. He told Variety, “I don’t have well-developed ideas for Squid Game 2.” “Just thinking about it is exhausting.” However, if I were to do it, I would not do it alone. I’d want to use a writers’ room and have many skilled directors.”

What could happen in Squid Game season 2?

In a December 2021 interview with Entertainment Weekly, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk claimed that if the show’s main character Gi-hun (Lee Jung-Jae) goes through a similar shift to play the Front Man, he may have to choose between good and evil.

“Isn’t it true that some people become Jedi and others become Darth Vader?” “I believe Gi-hun will face a crucial juncture in his life when he will be put to the test,” he stated. “I’d be the scariest Front Man you’ve ever seen if I had to be a Front Man.”

Dong-hyuk previously said to The Hollywood Reporter that he is working on a sequel. He said, “There are some additional storylines in the series that haven’t been handled.”

“Take, for example, the police officer’s narrative and his brother’s story, The Front Man. I could also delve into the backstory of the suit-clad recruiter in the first episode who plays ddakji with Gi-hun and hands him the card. I’ll simply say that there are a lot of stories for season 2 out there.”

“Of course, there is chatter [about season 2],” he subsequently told The Guardian. Because it has been such a success, this is unavoidable. I’m thinking about it. I have a broad vision in my head, but I’m not going to start working on it right immediately.”

Who would star in Squid Game 2?

Only Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-Jae) survives after the bulk of Squid Game’s players perished during the first season, including Kang Sae-book (Jung Ho-Yeon) and the hidden mastermind Oh Il-nam.

Season 2 would thus need a whole new cast. Producers would then have to decide whether to join the game with a fresh cast of characters or design the game to include a whole new set of deadly antics. Could it be that Gi-hun is attempting to completely shut down the game, as some fans believe?

What happens at the end of Squid Game season 1?

The nine-episode series follows the deadly game and its competitors to discover who will take home the prize money. After childhood BFF-turned-enemy Cho Sang-woo (Park Hae-soo) sacrifices himself, divorced father Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-Jae) wins the game.

Gi-hun refuses to spend the prize money for more than a year until discovering that the elderly guy he deceived during the game, Oh Il-nam (Oh Young-soo), was the mastermind behind it all.

Gi-hun realizes that the game is still going after Oh Il-nam dies, and he runs into the Salesman (Gong Yoo) soliciting new participants. Gi-hun swears to put an end to the game once and for all, which sets up a clear plot line for season 2.

When might Squid Game season 2 be released?

Squid Game was initially revealed in 2019, with development spanning two years and a September 2021 release date. Season 2 would most likely not come until late 2023, even on the most optimistic timeframe. Eek.
