Tommy Dorfman, born in the United States on May 13, 1992, is a famous actress for her role as Ryan Shaver in the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why (2017)
Tommy Dorfman Said She Would Have Transitioned Earlier
A little over a year ago, actress Tommy Dorfman proudly revealed in a Time spread that she is transgender. She remarked that she could have come out sooner if she hadn’t been included on the hit Netflix series “13 Reasons Why.”
Dorfman said on Rachel Bilson’s podcast “Broad Ideas,” “I think if I hadn’t booked that job, I would’ve started transitioning a lot sooner.”
As I explained to an interviewer, “I think because my work being (sic) so attached to my body and like face and like identity, and whatever I’d been recognized as, it delayed some of my growth and maturation in my mid-20s.”
Even at the age of 24, when Dorfman was cast in “13 Reasons Why,” she was struggling with gender identity. However, Dorfman played a gay, cisgender male in the series, a controversial but well viewed teen drama that launched in 2017, prompting her to “compartmentalize” the portions of herself that questioned her identity.
She thanked the producers of the show for casting her and stated, “For me, I feel like I kind of got caught in time for a minute.” I was like, “nope, that’s not for now” when it came to dealing with “anything around dysphoria or gender or stuff that had already been really present.”
She’s been clean since she was 21, Dorfman told Bilson, and she drew parallels between her first year as an out trans woman and the first year of sobriety. It’s just that this time, she said, she’s doing it all in the spotlight.
Dorfman said, “I felt like I had to do all those things again as a woman.” Changes in my body, brought on by factors such as hormones, present me with fresh difficulties.
A year before her interview with Time in 2021, Dorfman had transitioned in private. She felt that the statement was a “reintroduction to me as a woman.”
Before Tommy Dorfman Underwent Surgery
Tommy Dorfman came out as a trans woman to the world last year. On July 22, 2021, Dorfman, then 29 years old, announced the news on Instagram alongside images from a Time magazine photo session that featured her in a variety of stunning gowns and high heels.
Looking forward to reintroducing myself as the lady I’ve become. Dorfman stated, “My pronouns are she/her,” in the post, before thanking Time for publishing her story.
“I’m especially grateful to every single trans person who travelled this journey, broke barriers, and risked their lives to live truthfully and radically as themselves before me,” she wrote.
“I want to express my gratitude to the many trans women in my life who have helped me find my identity, learn to love and accept myself, and learn to assert myself in the world.”
