Stephens joined the cast of “The Rap Game,” a 2016 Lifetime reality competition series developed by Queen Latifah and Jermaine Dupri. Beginning rappers battled against one another over the course of eight weeks in various trials reminiscent of a boot camp.
Stephens, who competed under the stage name Miss Mulatto, ultimately came out on top and was awarded a recording contract by So So Def Records.
Stephens, however, was unsatisfied with the financial terms of the arrangement and rejected it in favor of pursuing a career as a freelancing musician.
First Singles and Mixtapes
The song “No More Talking” was Stephens’ debut single, published at the beginning of 2016. After that, she recorded a song called “Tough on the Internet” with fellow “Rap Game” contestant Lil Niqo. After releasing her first mixtape, “Miss Mulatto,” Stephens won the Youth Hip Hop/R&B Award at the Georgia Music Awards.
In April of 2017, she released her second mixtape, “Latto Let Em Know,” which featured such artists as Silentó, Lil Key, and Crucial.
The tune “Response Diss” was a diss track directed against another contestant on “Rap Game” named Young Lyric, and it was featured on the aforementioned mixtape.
The two continued to swap diss tunes long after this. Closing off 2017, Stephens released an EP named “Time and Pressure.”
