Following its heartbreaking 1883 spin-off, the world of Yellowstone continues to expand this year with another prequel, 1923.

Who Is Jack Dutton to John Dutton? Relationship, Explained

Leading the series are Jacob and Carla Dutton, played by Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, who play the roles of the matriarch and matriarch of the family, respectively.

Jacob Dutton plays an important role throughout the series, but who exactly is he and how is he related to Yellowstone’s John Dutton?

Jacob Dutton is the great-great uncle of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton (John Dutton III).

Tracing John’s lineage through generations, his father John Dutton II, his grandfather Jack Dutton, and his great-grandfather John Dutton Sr. John’s great-grandfather was James Dutton in 1883, and Jacob is James’ brother, so he is John’s great-grandfather.

1923 is set to arrive at Paramount+ in the US on Sunday, December 18, 2022, followed internationally a day later. A sequel to last year’s 1883, the series follows a new generation of the Dutton family as they struggle to survive as Montana faces one of the most difficult decades in its history.

Jacob and Karla Dutton not only face the expansion of the increasingly aggressive Western powers and threats against them, but also the hardships of Prohibition and the Great Depression that have overwhelmed Montana faster and harder than the rest of the United States.

Jacob Dutton is the brother of Tim McGraw’s 1883 character James Dutton, who founded the Yellowstone Ranch on the site where his daughter Elsa died.

James Dutton is fatally injured in his flashback to 1893 shown in Season 4 of Yellowstone. After his death, Jacob and Carla his Dutton took over running the ranch instead.

However, Jacob adopted James’ grown son John Dutton Sr. as his right hand so that he could learn how to run the ranch himself when Jacob was gone.

Jack will definitely need more time to adjust to life as a cowboy, but his loyalty to his family is evident. In his episode, the pilot discovers that Jack has postponed his marriage to his fiancée Elizabeth (Michelle Randolph) and helped his father and great-uncle take the cows to the mountains and feed them.

The sacrifices Jack made for his family seem oblivious to John and Jacob. Nevertheless, he traveled with them into the mountains, where he met the shepherd Banner Clayton and fed the nearby herds.
