Map Search: Instagram launches new tool in Portugal

Instagram today launched the ‘Map Search’ tool which aims to facilitate the process of finding nearby and popular businesses, such as restaurants, cafes, or stores, based on the user’s location.

‘Search on the Map’ is launched today in Portugal and in just three other European countries: Italy, Spain and Greece.

The ‘Map Search’ tool was introduced on Instagram to reflect the behavior patterns of users on the social network who use the platform to share memories of a particular place – such as a restaurant or a holiday hotel – through hashtags. Now these behavior patterns will also be used for useful location searches.

‘Map Search’ can be used in two ways.

The first is to use as a new type of social network browsing. If you press the ‘Search on Map’ icon – upper right corner of the navigation bar – the most popular places near your location will immediately appear with several hashtags divided by categories. The second way to use this new feature is by searching for hashtags. For example, if you search the hashtag # lisbonfoodies, restaurants that use this hashtag in their posts appear in the results. And then you can find out all the information about this business through its Instagram page.

Instagram claims to have developed this new feature after observing the behavior of its users and the way they look for businesses and services of interest and close to their location. And the social network believes this is a more convenient way to find local businesses and an opportunity for small and medium business owners to get more customers through Instagram.
